KLA OCEAN SAFETY TOOLS AVAILABLE AT NO CHARGE

  Two important Ocean Safety communication pieces are now available to all businesses on Kauai. A new Ocean Safety video is available for retail stores, activities desks, rental car offices, resorts, hotels, bed and breakfast, vacation rental and timeshare in-house systems.  The video is 6 minutes long and it along with a new six panel Ocean Safety Brochure focus on the same points that can HELP SAVE LIVES when frequenting our beaches.  The key points stressed in both include: utilizing our lifeguard towers for immediate sources of information as well as safe places to settle for the day.  How to identify rip currents and what to do if you are caught in one.  How to use a rescue tube, and the all important snorkel with a buddy system.  The video can be downloaded at KauaiLIfeguards.org or you can pick up a free dvd of the captioned video at the Kauai Ocean Safety offices in the Piikoi Building in Lihue. 

      There are also over 220,000 Ocean Safety brochures available for pick up at the Ocean Safety Bureau.  It too reinforces the key points of prevention.  These complementary services are part of this years Ocean Minded Community campaign that received support from businesses around Kauai thru the first half of the year.  Monies go towards the Keiki and Junior Lifeguard program, access and use of the Ocean safety trailer, continued awareness and operation of the roving patrols at unguarded beaches, printing of new brochures and access to the new video, safety points stressed at visitor industry briefings, maintenance and exposure concerning our rescue tubes, and media campaigns that reinforce going to Kauai’s lifeguarded beaches. The work our lifeguards perform daily in Helping to Save Lives is continuous.  Here are the results of such work between January and May of this year.

2017 KEIKI/JUNIOR LIFEGUARD PROGRAM

The Kauai Keiki and Junior Lifeguard Program has grown to the point of now has 5 junior sessions for those aged 12-17 and 5 keiki sessions for ages 8-11 and the program can train up to 550 registrants. The Kauai Island Championship, along with State and National competition creates teamwork, pride in Kauai and an exceptional knowledge of ocean safety.

Training sessions begin June 5 th at Salt Pond and continue thru the summer leading up to the Kauai Island Championships July 22 nd , the State finals July 29 th and national competition August 9 th in Daytona Beach Florida. Junior guard directors from around the state will select an all star team of performers who will compete at Nationals. Last year Kelta O’Rourke received the Kauai Marriott Percy Kinimaka Award of Aloha and was also invited to compete in the International championships.

Registration for this years program begins May 1 st , and entries will only be accepted online at Kauai.gov, which will feature a special link to the program.

This year KLA received support for training sessions around the island from Déjà vu Surf Hawaii, Kalaheo Dental Group, Coldwell Bankers Makai Properties, the Parrish Collection, First Hawaiian Bank, A& B and Kukuiula Development. The Kauai Island Championship is sponsored by Hokuala, and global travel is funded in part by Coco Palms ltd, and Kauai Community Federal Credit Union with an exceptional additional donation by Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg.

KŌLOA RUM MIXES WITH KLA – TO HELP SAVE LIVES

     The Kauai Lifeguard Association Ocean Minded Community Campaign received a boost from Kōloa Rum and Kauai’s restaurants. Portions of the proceeds from Kōloa Rum cocktails sold will be donated to the KLA Time Share briefing program that reinforces safety thru the year.  Kauai’s lifeguards Dickie Chang, and visitor industry concierge will speak about Ocean safety tips around Kauai. Efforts will continue thru the year at The Cliffs at Princeville, Pono Kai in Kapaa, the Kauai Marriott, and Lawai Beach Resort.  The points of discussion include going to lifeguarded beaches for guidance and information, recognizing rip currents and what to do if you are caught in one, where to find and how to use rescue tubes, and how to use snorkel gear and to always snorkel with a buddy along with avoid climbing on wet rocks near the shoreline or a flood prone stream.  These features address the primary reasons and causes for life threatening rescues and drownings across our state. 

  Having these discussions face to face reinforces the same messages in the new KLA Ocean Safety tip brochures and brand new video.  The overriding theme is KNOW THE CONDITIONS, KNOW YOUR LIMITS, AND WHEN IN DOUBT DO NOT GO OUT.  The Ocean Minded Community campaign funding for media and programs will receive a boost from sales of Koloa Rum cocktails offered at Brennecke’s Beach Broiler, the Kauai Marriott, Hukilau Lanai and by Tiki Iniki.  Jeanne Toulon, Director of Public & Media Relations for Kōloa Rum remarked “KLA is such an important organization for all of us to support.  It is an honor for Kōloa Rum to be able to give back to the community and our visitors to help save lives.” 

This is the second year in a row that Kōloa Rum has assisted in KLA’s efforts to Help Save Lives.  Andy Melamed beamed “Its always refreshing to see our Kauai community come together in so many ways when it comes to safety at our beaches and ocean. And Kōloa Rum is a prime example of such. They make our efforts a whole lot easier”.

By years end nearly 2,500,000 beach goers are projected to recorded at our lifeguarded beaches. And yet the number of rescues and drownings on Kauai primarily occur at unguarded beaches like Lumahai, Anini, Queens Bath, Secret Beach, Larsens,secluded eastern and western shorelines, Shipwreck’s Beach and the calm lagoons of our south shore where many snorkeling incidents and drownings occur.

This years KLA 4th Wave campaign accumulated funds from over 240 donors. The money raised is immediately providing two new King Auto Center 2016 Ram Quad Cab four wheel drive trucks, each with over 9000 pound towing capacity for accompanying trailers,jetskis, and rescue equipment. A total of three roving patrol units with jetski certified lifeguards will begin roaming our unguarded beaches from December 1st and will continue to do so annually, every day of the year.

Funds raised from the 4th Wave Campaign has allowed KLA to make donations to Kauai’s Rescue Tube Foundation which features over 200 tubes strategically placed along our shorelines. Additional donations are being made to Kauai’s Keiki and Junior Lifeguard Program which provides free training for up to 500 Kauai youth every summer.

The campaign in 2016 was an example of how our community unites to get things accomplished”, remarked Andy Melamed, marketing and event director for the KLA. In 2017, the Kauai Lifeguard Association will introduce an all encompassing Ocean Minded Community campaign. The campaign will feature communication, training and programs around ocean safety through the year. The campaign will create a multiplier effect of safety and prevention that will extend beyond the lifeguard towers and roving patrols. The campaign will reach residents and visitors alike, placing ocean safety at the forefront daily.”:

Details outlined by Melamed includes attention to our 10 lifeguard towers and their respective lifesaving efforts. Utilization of the new Roving Patrol units will also be featured. A New Ocean Safety video will highlight rules of safety while swimming thru rip currents, use of Rescue tubes, and a new “Snorkel with a Buddy” message. This new video is planned to air at the airport, on line, and will be made available to all hotels and resorts. Ocean safety seminars will be hosted by Kauai lifeguards at weekly timeshare gatherings. Sponsorship and support of our Keiki and Junior Lifeguard program is included. The printing and providing of new Ocean Safety Brochures is planned with a special section devoted to Snorkeling with a Buddy. KLA will also support the Rescue Tube Foundation with coverage as to where to find and how to use rescue tubes. The County’s Ocean Safety Trailer will be at events, parades and at schools around our island. There will be the Percy Kinimaka Award of Aloha to the Junioir Lifeguard of the Year, and the Tower of Power salute to the lifeguard team of the year. These presentations will be at the annual Westin Princeville Resort Jazz and Wine festival in September that supports KLA annually with a silent auction.

Melamed concludes, “All these elements when presented to the community in a variety of ways using social media, electronic and print media will join us together in building an Ocean Minded Community that unites us with one common goal, to Help Save Lives. “
