The KLA 3rd Wave Celebration set goals in June of 2015 that were suggested by Kauai’s Lifeguards and Ocean Safety Bureau. Communication of nearly 2,000,000 beach-goers annually while on duty was a key need expressed. These mass communications on site could be best served thru solar paneled stadium strength p.a. systems like the ones used at Waimea Bay on Oahu as well as on Maui’s beaches. Additional communication to beach goers would be made thru high powered weather proof megaphones, so that each tower and lifeguard team had additional means of communications to all beach goers within their immediate vicinity.
The 3rd WAVE concert/celebration was planned for October 19th and it included live music headliners, a fabulous buffet dinner, ice carving sweepstakes, spirited live auctions with guest emcees doing the honors, as well as an ocean art gallery and silent auction. On stage there was Jen ken Po competition as well as a Jokers Wild joke contest for prizes hosted by Hawaii’s favorite comedian Augie T. Presentations and donations were also made on stage that evening between the music which was provided by Titus Kinimaka, Shilo Pa, Makana, and the Rough Riders who were comprised of Henry Kapono, John Cruz, and Brother Noland.
The event has held at the Jasmine Ballroom of the Kauai Beach Resort, and tables were sold beginning in early July for the October event. All 45 tables of ten were sold and accounted for within the first 17 days of exposure and advertising, and the event netted nearly $50,000 which did not include an additional $29,000 donated on stage by the Westin Princeville Resort who staged an additional fundraiser in September during their annual Jazz and Wine Festival.
Net proceeds are being used to provide mass communication equipment as described as well as support for Kauai’s Keiki and Junior Lifeguard program and travel to the mainland in 2016, along with additional ocean safety media plans and recognitions thru 2016.
A 4th Wave date has already been set for October 22nd at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Clubs Grand Ballroom with goals to Help Save Lives in conjunction with new programs put forth with the County Of Kauai. Details of the 4th Wave will be made available as they unfold on this website and in media around Kauai.
Congratulations to the Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association on its Third Wave Celebration! On behalf of the County of Kaua‘i, we extend our deepest appreciation to the Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association and the many volunteers who have worked diligently over the years to promote ocean safety and support Kaua‘i’s Ocean Safety Bureau.
The Third Wave campaign will help to purchase additional life-saving equipment for our ocean safety personnel. Further, it will help our Kaua‘i Junior Lifeguards – who have brought home the State Championship title for the past 12 years – travel to California to represent that State of Hawai‘i at the national competition.
To the sponsors, donors, and volunteers of KLA and this year’s Third Wave campaign, thank you for your continued support of our ocean safety efforts. It is because of you that Kaua‘i is home to some of the best lifeguards in the world, and our Junior Lifeguard program is an overwhelming success.
We all play a role in keeping our residents and visitors safe. Mahalo for doing your part!
Congratulations to KLA’s organizers for another prosperous event. My best wishes to all for an enjoyable celebration!
