KLA 2ND Wave Ocean Safety Campaign Begins

The KLA 2nd WAVE campaign will continue thru early October. One phase of the campaign is interviews and articles  in The Garden Island Newspaper with “KLA OHANA” groups that reinforce ocean safety in the community.  The initial feature is Pat Durkin’s Wave Project (Water Awareness Visitor Education) which highlights educating factors for our visitors.   A total of eleven different feature stories about organizations and safety efforts around Kauai  will be highlighted in The Garden Island, on Wala Au television with Dickie Chang, as well as with the KONG Radio Group. “The goal is to continually diminish the number of needed rescues and drowning around our island while keeping our rescue facilities in top shape,” remarked Fire Chief Bob Westerman.

KLA fundraising efforts will be made available thru sponsorships of an Official 32-page, 15-month month Kauai Lifeguard Association Calendar featuring pictures and information regarding our beaches and lifeguards along with maps  of our towers, how to find and use Rescue Tubes, emergency safety tips, and photos of the KLA OHANA organizations in action.  Scenic and action water shots of Kauai are also to be included. The calendar is the brainchild of Andy Melamed who in working with KLA and Ron Kosen of Photo Spectrum.  Melamed exclaimed,  “The plan is to have it for sale at retail locations at the same time random prize donation tickets and concert tickets to a Second Wave Concert celebration will be made available.”

Individuals, groups or Kauai businesses can sponsor a page  or portion of this calendar or they can  assist in sponsoring the concert or purchasing sponsor tables at for  concert  itself which is set for October 7th at Kilohana.  Monty Downs, president of KLA and Emergency Room physician at Wilcox Hospital is also a music enthusiast, and he appropriately named the concert HAWAII SUPERSTAR SUNDAY.  He remarked, “The concert will feature some of Hawaii’s top performers including  Willie K. and his band, Kalapana, Henry Kapono and his band, John Cruz and friends, along with guest emcee and comedian Andy Bumatai.”

There will be live and silent auctions, prize drawings, and all  food and beverage will be handled by Gaylords at Kilohana.   The silent auction will also benefit Leadership Kauai.  For information regarding sponsorship of the KAUAI LIFEGUARD ASSOCIATION calendar or any features of the 2nd Wave Ocean Safety campaign you can reach  Andy Melamed at  808-826 9291/ 808-482 0218 or andy@kongradio.com.  A new website KauaiLifeguards.org is under construction and you can follow the KLA right now on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, or our Blog.
