History of KLA Waves

A WAVE OF AWARENESS

The KLA WAVE CELEBRATIONS became a concept to HELP SAVE LIVES. This mission was adopted after Kauai became a leader in numbers of drownings per capita in the United States. Because over 70% of all water-related casualties were visitors to our island, it was decided a more concerted effort towards ocean safety was needed with these visitors. Additional jet skis and ATV’s for our ten lifeguard towers was an additional goal as well as supporting our communities local population thru media, junior lifeguard programs and encouraging all to frequent lifeguarded beaches. This along with a stirring ocean safety video at the airport , implementing rescue tubes at secluded beaches, and brochures in all of the visitor industry rooms and vacation rentals became costly.

Hence a celebration of sorts was created to initially join the public and private sector, the visitor industry and businesses in general along with active ocean minded individuals. The Celebrations initially were 10-week safety campaigns that began in the summer and ended at the start of the high surf season for our islands north and west shores. It all ended with a party that saluted our lifeguards and their efforts. The WAVE of AWARENESS attracted the entire community and put Ocean Safety at the top of everyone’s mind. The WAVE Celebrations included live music, food, fun festivities, live auctions, silent auctions, sweepstakes, as well as recognition on stage in an informal festive manner. The WAVES became A PARTY WITH A PURPOSE. Each of the 3 events held have met their stated goals in supporting our County Ocean Safety Bureau while also creating a history of memorable evenings of camaraderie. And most importantly they have Helped Save Lives. The number of drownings annually have steadily decreased while the respect for our Ocean has increased exponentially.

WAVE events are now planned annually in October allowing the funding and equipment purchased by the KLA to be utilized the following year at beaches around our island.

The events are created by Andy Melamed who now has a team of helpers affectionately referred to as Andy’s Angels that help make the campaigns most comprehensive and most effective. A 4th WAVE event is reserved for October 22nd at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club’s Grand Ballroom and it will feature major headlining talent from around the state and the mainland interspersed with many games competition and good times along with an award-winning feast! All meant to raise funds while further creating Unity in the Community.
